What is mediation?

Mediation is a form of alternative dispute resolution. It is a voluntary and confidential framework for managing conflicts in which the participants make use of the services of an independent and impartial third participant, the mediator. The mediator assists the participants who are seeking for a solution integrating the respective interests and needs.

Mediation is characterised by the following fundamental principles:

  • voluntary involvement and autonomy of the participants;
  • impartiality and neutrality of the mediator;
  • strict confidentiality.
